French luxury fashion house Hermès has appointed British designer Grace Wales Bonner as its new creative director of menswear, marking a groundbreaking moment in fashion history. At 35, the London-born designer becomes the first Black woman to lead menswear at a major global fashion house, according to The New York Times.
Wales Bonner, known for blending tailoring with cultural storytelling, will take over from Véronique Nichanian, who has helmed Hermès’ menswear division for an extraordinary 37 years. Nichanian’s final collection will debut in Paris in January 2026, while Wales Bonner’s first designs for the brand are set to launch in 2027.
In a statement, Wales Bonner expressed her gratitude and excitement, calling the new role “a dream realised.” She added, “I am deeply honoured to be entrusted with this position and to contribute to the legacy of craftsmanship and creativity that defines Hermès. I look forward to bringing my vision to this magical house.”
Industry reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, with Vogue noting that while many insiders expected an internal appointment, Hermès made a bold move by selecting an established and celebrated designer from outside the company. “Hermès went for a renowned talent,” the magazine stated.
Wales Bonner founded her eponymous label in 2014 and quickly gained recognition for her intellectual approach to fashion, often exploring themes of identity, race, and heritage through design. Her work has received critical acclaim and several prestigious awards, and she has collaborated with major global brands such as Adidas.
She has also built a strong celebrity following, with clients including Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, who has frequently worn her designs on and off the red carpet. Her unique blend of elegance, cultural nuance, and modern masculinity is expected to bring a fresh perspective to Hermès’ storied menswear line.
The appointment is not only a significant career milestone for Wales Bonner, but also a cultural shift in an industry that has long been critiqued for its lack of diversity in leadership roles. As she steps into this influential position, fashion insiders and fans alike are watching with anticipation to see how her vision will shape the future of Hermès menswear.
